THE TEN ESSENTIALS FOR WINTER WILDERNESS TRAVEL
AND MODERATE HIKING
The Ten Essentials include all the gear that is necessary to survive even the most unexpected extreme winter conditions. But there is much more! It is also essential to be very familiar with a host of hazards associated with winter; extreme cold, snow, ice, topography, altitude, visibility, wind, unpredictability and time. Learn how to use your knowledge to make the right and timely decisions in the face of adversity. Winter itself is adversity! This is NOT mountaineering training. You might think of it as an introduction. If you choose to hike or backpack on this mountain or similar terrain in the winter this training is a start toward gaining the knowledge that you can only acquire by repeated experiences. For that, hike with truly experienced and thoughtful partners as often as possible. Winter wilderness travel can be glorious….. or not. It’s up to you.
