Hairy Woodpecker

Picoides villosus

The Hairy Woodpecker is a medium sized black bird with a large white patch on back and white wing bars. Outer tail feathers are entirely white. The male has a red patch on back of head. Their total length is about 9 ¼ inches, with a wingspan of 15 inches.

Voice:

A loud, sharp peek.

Food:

Primary diet is made up of insects.

Nest:

Holes excavated in tree trunks.

Habitat:

This woodpecker is found in forested areas, especially where dead trees are standing.

Range:

This bird is fairly common throughout most of the United States, mainly in coniferous forests.
