Earthquake! Every Second Counts
Recording of our Getting in Touch with Nature virtual presentation of "Earthquake! Every Second Counts", by Dr. Robert de Groot on Tuesday, July 13th, 2021.
More than 143 million people across 39 states live in areas of significant seismic risk. The ShakeAlert® Earthquake Early Warning system, operated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), quickly detects significant earthquakes, estimates shaking, and issues data packages called ShakeAlert Messages to technical partners, such as a transportation agency or cell phone app operators. This information is used to develop and deliver alerts that rapidly reach people and trigger automated actions to protect vital systems and infrastructure, potentially seconds before shaking arrives at their location.
This presentation covers how ShakeAlert works and how the USGS is building an earthquake early warning industry that will impact many sectors including transportation, utilities, healthcare, and education. Learn how you can receive ShakeAlert-powered alerts on your phone via apps, the Wireless Emergency Alert system, and through Android-based phones. Used in combination with other earthquake information products, and fostering a culture of preparedness, ShakeAlert will take us farther down the path of reducing our risk from earthquakes.
