Southern Sagebrush Lizard

Sceloporus vandenburgianus

Also a spiny lizard. Looks like Western Fence Lizard but smaller. Like to bask in open, sunlit areas therefore are frequently seen.

Description: 4 ½”- 6” Gray, greenish or brownish in color. Males usually have light blue mottling on throat and belly patches. Faint light stripe where back and sides meet; reddish orange behind forelegs.

Habitat: Sagebrush deserts, juniper-pine woodlands, redwood forests, manzanita. In gravelly soils or fine-sand dunes; along rocky ridges with scattered bushes; basically a ground dweller; very common

Range: Western U.S.; southern MT to NM, west to WA, OR, and CA. Can be found at elevations of 10,000’.

Food: Mainly insects and spiders

Season: Active April to October
